The Margherita pizza, a quintessential dish of Italian cuisine, was created in 1889 in Naples to honor Queen Margherita of Savoy. Pizza maker Raffaele Esposito crafted a pie topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, representing the colors of the Italian flag. This simple yet iconic combination quickly gained popularity, becoming a beloved classic that continues to delight pizza lovers around the world.


  • pizza dough ball (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced

  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced

  • Fresh basil leaves

  • Extra virgin olive oil

  • Salt and pepper, to taste


  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to the highest temperature it can reach (usually around 500°F or 260°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
  • Prepare the pizza dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a circle of desired thickness. Transfer the rolled-out dough to a lightly greased pizza pan or parchment paper.
  • Assemble the pizza: Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Arrange the sliced tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bake the pizza: Carefully transfer the assembled pizza to the preheated oven or pizza stone. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Finish with fresh basil: Remove the pizza from the oven and immediately scatter fresh basil leaves over the top. Drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil for extra flavor.
  • Slice and serve: Allow the pizza to cool for a minute or two before slicing it into wedges. Serve hot and enjoy!
